Tuesday. On their way home from a New Year's Eve party at their friends Jeb and Jenny Scott's house, Dan and Judith Merrick are in a terrible car accident around 3 AM, leaving Dan with amnesia. Judith Merrick discharges herself from Marin County Hospital at 6:18 AM, 3 1/2 hours after she was admitted. After Dan recovers and contacts private investigator Gus Klein, Gus finds a fax that Jack Stanton sent to his boss from the fax machine in Dan's office 5 1/2 hours after the accident, at 8:04 AM: "Dear Paul, I've finally decided to take the plunge and go for that job in Tokyo. I'm shipping out tonight, so don't expect to hear from me for a while. Happy New Year!" Appointment in Dan Merrick's daily planner: "SAUSALITO BREAKFAST"
